Archaeology, cycling tourism and foor and wine
All thirteen municipalities of the Appia Regina Viarum–Provincia di Latina project are involved in promoting and coordinating the wide-area policies for the enhancement of the territory.
The Appia Regina Viarum – Provincia di Latina project, created and coordinated by Province President Gerardo Stefanelli, is an innovative model for integrated promotion and coordination of regional policies aimed at enhancing the Pontine region, just southbound Rome, with its cultural, landscape, and manufacturing excellence.
Thanks to the effective collaboration and synergy between the thirteen involved
municipalities, the Province of Latina assumes a leading and coordinating role,
promoting shared planning of tourism and local development strategies.
This regional vision has been the groundstone of three thematic itineraries, aimed at highlighting the best of local culture, traditions, and beauty—Archaeology, Cycling, and Food and Wine—which, within a unified framework of territorial promotion, connect the various local specialties, creating a coherent, sustainable, and attractive tourism offering for visitors from around the world.
From the archaeological sites that testify to the grandeur of the ancient Regina
Viarum (i.e. Queen of the ways) to the cycling routes that cross the Pontine Plain to
the hilltop villages suspended in time, passing through the food and wine excellences that highlight the authentic flavours of the area, each itinerary becomes part of a unique mosaic of identity, guardian of a fragment of the Appian Way.
The Appian Way, Regina Viarum, thus confirms itself not only as a symbol of Italian history and culture, but also as a strategic axis of sustainable development and territorial cohesion, uniting the past and future of the Province of Latina in a single vision, inviting lovers of the Bel Paese to be guided along this journey through history.

Archaeology and Cycling Tourism
From the temples of Norba to the theaters of Minturnae, from isolated mausoleums
to landscapes suspended above the sea, the province of Latina offers an open-air
museum to ancient history enthusiasts.
And for cyclists, it offers a mix of history and adventure: a route through nature, ancient stones, and views that change with every turn, from the Pontine Plain to the Aurunci Mountains, down to the sea of southern Latium.
The slow and surprising itinerary begins in Rome and crosses the entire province from north to south: in addition to the capital Latina, it passes by Cisterna di Latina, Norma, Sermoneta, Sezze, Pontinia, Terracina, Monte San Biagio, Fondi, Itri,
Gaeta, Formia, and Minturno.
Food and Wine
An itinerary through authentic flavors, rural traditions, and age-old landscapes, where the history of the Appia Regina Viarum intertwines with the agricultural and culinary identity of the Province of Latina.
Sapore di Appia (i.e. Flavour of Appia)—that’s its name—is a food and wine journey that accompanies the traveler on a discovery of local delicacies from the Lepini hills to the sea, including historic villages, markets, and farms that preserve the flavours of the region: Norma, home of the Lepini Mountains hazelnuts and traditional sweets such as nougat and hazelnut tarts; Latina, a blend of agricultural tradition and innovation, with Pontine honey and local fruit and vegetables; Cisterna di Latina, the capital of the Latina kiwi PGI, the iconic fruit of the Pontine plain; Sermoneta, with Colline Pontine PDO extra virgin olive oil, paired with fragrant baked goods and traditional Lepini desserts; Sezze, home of the famous Roman artichoke, with local wines and a cuisine that tells the story of the plain’s rural history; Pontinia, the birthplace of Pontine buffalo mozzarella, dotted with farms and dairies that open their doors to visitors, offering experiences among pastures, tastings, and educational farms; Terracina, with its Moscato di Terracina CDO, accompanied by the freshest seafood and recipes that blend maritime and rural traditions; Monte San Biagio, famous for its Monte San Biagio PAT sausage, flavoured with coriander and chili pepper; Fondi, home of Itri olives, native wines, and the fresh vegetables that liven up the local cuisine; Itri, renowned for its Colline Pontine DOP extra virgin olive oil and the celebrated Gaeta black olive, two symbols of the rural culture of southern Latium; Gaeta, with its famous tiella, canned bluefish, and salted anchovies; Formia, with its canned bluefish and salted anchovies; and Minturno, home to fine wines, cheeses, and traditional cured meats that keep the memory of rural communities alive.
