15 years and 1000 desires
More than 100 Design Events in the city
As of every year and with an ever-growing curiosity, the Brussels Design September promotes the interaction between roughly a hundred Belgian and international artists and creators with amateurs and connoisseurs in the field of design.
BDS is a fundamentally multifaceted festival that encourages the greater numbers to cross the line and encounter the new facets of today’s design industry by coming in contact with the artists and craftsmen and women in their action (i.e. Arts&Crafts, Jewelry-making, Ceramics, Tapestry Fablabs, Upcycling…etc).
Amongst all, the public can choose to see exhibitions, open workshops, happenings, conferences, hands-on workshops, name it…we do it. We will miss no opportunity to encourage exchange and enrichment of knowledge or sensitivity.
This edition will focus on design solutions for our new ways of living and working. In keeping with the multidisciplinary spirit of the event, the various movements, influences, references and professions involved in today’s design will be harmoniously highlighted.
Brussels city of design
Once again, we want to reinforce the image of Brussels as an attractive and dynamic capital: we will highlight the innovation of our young designers through various events related to Design, in order to enhance the commercial attractiveness of the city.
These past few years, Brussels has incontestably become a city of Design, thanks to the talent and the ingeniousness of our designers. Design from Brussels has started to gain quite a reputation and we want to contribute to this in our own way by organising this event.
Design September always wanted to connect with the city and represent its various exaltations and diversities. The importance and influence of the event are shaped more and more as design in its most various forms takes an increasingly important place in the daily life of Brussels : urban furniture, installations, lights…
Our designers’ innovations find their place in the urban landscape. This has contributed in a positive way to the city’s reputation and to its economic and tourist activity. The city of Brussels needs events that put creativity and innovation at the forefront. Design September, alongside the Brussels-Capital Region, the City of Brussels and many institutional and private partners, is proud to contribute to it.
Highlights and news of Brussels Design September 2021
As the pandemic rages, we have globally suffered the loss of social interaction, and we can only highlight the fact that this 15th edition of the BDS is a much-appreciated opportunity to experience interaction and exchange. Therefore, by organizing themed visits centred on today’s situation and on the evolution of our global “modus vivendi”, the accent of this year’s edition will be put on dialogue.
The 2021 BDS’s figurehead will be ecology, by offering the possibility to take part in Eco-Design and Industrial Design-oriented activities, and we will zoom in on the eco-awareness of vintage and second-hand acquisitions.
We shall also shine a light on Interior Design as co-working and co-living are emerging as a new way of living in today’s world.
One of our many goals will be to invite the larger numbers to be acquainted to Design Thinking, which is based on sharing ideas and collaboration, so as to remind us all of the importance of the human dimension and of how our evolution is based on our interaction with our peers.
Last but not least, the Arts&Crafts facet will star Brussel’s renowned savoir-faire in design and craftsmanship.
Exhibitions of renowned designers in emblematic places of the city such as the Horta House, BOZAR, the Brussels Design Museum will strengthen the cultural offer of this 2021 edition.
The Contemporary Design Market, together with the Brussels Design Market, will take place on September 25th and 26th2021, at the recently renovated harbour station of Tour et Taxis.
Fifty Belgian or Belgium-based designers will be presenting and transmitting their creations.
The Brussels Design Market will accentuate the image of Brussels as a vintage city: a vintage route through the city will once again mark this edition of the Brussels Design Market, now the largest vintage market in Europe.
Contemporary Design Market
For the September 2021 edition, an area of Brussels Design Market will be dedicated to contemporary design!
Both well-known and up-and-coming Belgian designers from different disciplines will once again be in attendance to showcase and sell their creations.
The Contemporary Design Market is part of the Design September agenda and offers a unique opportunity to discover and buy Belgian design.
The event is organised in collaboration with Flanders DC and Wallonie Design.
Brussels Design Market
The Brussels Design Market was launched over 15 years ago, by three individuals passionate about vintage design. One of them, Thierry Belenger, is still in charge of its organisation today.
Since its foundation, the Brussels Design Market has evolved into the largest market devoted to vintage design in Europe and has quickly become one of the “must-attend” events of the international vintage design sector.
Commerce Design Awards
Following the initiative launched by Montreal City in 1995, the Brussels Commerce Design Awards encourage collaborations between traders and design professionals within the Brussels region.
The event has served as a strategic tool for the city’s trade industry, highlighting the benefits of quality spatial planning design by qualified professionals.
The initiative has been directly followed by other cities around the world such as Saint-Etienne, Marseille, Lyon, Nantes, Luxembourg, Eindhoven and more..
Like last year, Commerce Design Brussels will take place in synergy with Brussels Design September. This will make it possible to improve the national and international reach of the initiative, and allow it to integrate the city’s current challenges and its commercial and urban development policy. Thanks to the support of the Brussels-Capital Region and hub.brussels, the competition will reach a large target audience of businesses and designers located in Brussels.
